a5c7b9f00b It is a distant galaxy, in the far future year, 10191. Arrakis is a desert planet and the only source of Melange, a vital drug used by Guild Navigators for space travel from star system to star system. Two families, the Atreides and the Harkonnens, fight one another for sole control of the Melange mining operations on Arrakis. When Duke Leto Atreides is assassinated by the evil Baron Harkonnen, Duke Leto's son, Paul, and Paul's mother, the Lady Jessica, flee deep into the desert of Arrakis. There, they are befriended by the Fremen, natives of Arrakis. Under the influence of Melange, Paul learns he has special powers and, that he can see into the future. Paul unites the Freman under his leadership, forms an army of warriors, and leads them into battle against Baron Harkonnen and the corrupt Padishah Emperor, Shaddam IV, who is in league with the Harkonnens. Paul vows to avenge his father's murder, and sets out to liberate Arrakis and its people from the Emperor's rule, and to fulfill his destiny.
The desert planet Arrakis - we enter the year 10191 and the whole universe depends on the spice Melange which exists only on this dry and desolate planet. The natives of this planet await the arrival of their Messiah who will lead them into a holy war against the evil Harkonnen empire. This is the film adaptation based on Frank Herbert's cult novel.
Just plain loved it. It's one of those movies I never tire of… if it ever comes on TV i have to sit and watch it.

I'm shocked and amazed that there are negative reviews of this film. So I'd like to point out some similarities and differences between it and the 2001 : A Space Odyssey reviews (which seem to be always favorable). I loved that one, too, by the way.

Similarities: Striking visuals, lots of symbolism, lots of enigmas/lots unexplained.

Differences: limited dialogue in 2001, pristine atmosphere in 2001 (aka clean and ultra simple, sometimes boring, visuals), covertly political and satirical, 2001 was also very simple in terms of technology and sci-fi. Dune was more obvious with the political dealings and had more "magic".

So why does everybody like 2001 and only some like Dune? The same reason everybody likes Lord of the Ringsopposed to some other good fantasy movies. The Lord of the Rings was mythical, but had calmer and very played down "magic". This means the closed half of the human race that can't handle the "magic" side of things didn't put up a wall.

Open up your wall when you watch a movie like Dune. If you don't want to enjoy something, go to work instead.
If you're a fan of Frank Herbert's novel (And I am. It's my favorite novel of all-time), chances are you're going to find a lot to complain about when it comes to writer/director David Lynch's controversial 1984 film adaptation. Not the minor tweaks, inevitable omissions and odd aesthetic choices, I'm talking fundamental changes to the heart and the subtext of the story. But despite this, I adore this film. Is it a good adaptation of 'Dune'? No. It's not the dropped characters, like the Fenrings, or reduced or totally omitted story lines, suchThufar Hawat's time among the Harkonnens (Though, because it's Lynch, we do get Hawat having to milk a hairless cat). Or even the fact that the bulk of Paul's time with the Fremen is told in montage form. It's turning Paul into an actual deity, without all of the subtext of religious manipulation.

But, if you choose to view the film on its own terms and in the context that Lynch presents it, I still believe it works exceptionally wella piece of epic space opera. With some incredible design work, an amazing score (By the rock band Toto!?–with an additional track by Brian Eno!?) and a cast who absolutely inhabit their roles, 'Dune' is, in my humble opinion at least, a flawed masterpiece.
Lynch's third feature may have been a commercial disaster, but it gets under your skin and is marked by unforgettable images and an extraordinary soundtrack.
Nowhere. It just does not exist. The closest we have to David Lynch's original vision is the theatrical release. Some people sometimes refer to the extended TV cutthe "director's cut" (and some even dare to offer copies of it in various auction sites under that label), but that couldn't be further removed from reality, that version was rejected by Lynch to the point of deleting his name from the credits. A legal DVD of Dune: The Director's Cut exists, but that's for the 2000 Sci-Fi Channel miniseries, not this film.

However, the cast and crew of Lynch's Dune have confirmed that Lynch showed them an 'assembly cut' of the film shortly after principal photography wrapped. Although the film had yet to go through post-production, the reaction was very positive. This cut has not been seen since (as is the case with most assembly cuts).

There is also a fan version available, that attempts to get closer to both the novel and David Lynch's original vision: http://www.fanedit.org/ifdb/412-dune-the-alternative-edition-redux It's "Backyard" by Emmett Chapman, included on his album Parallel Galaxy. Chapman was also the creator of the instrument (knownthe Chapman Stick) that Gurney plays, repainted and with an added lower part to represent the Baliset described by Frank Herbert in the original novel. Herbert was very complimentary towards the film, impressed that Lynch had managed to include so much from his novel in such a short time. He did, however, take a small issue with the portrayal of Paulhaving become a literal god-figure at the end. Both versions contain footage that's missing in the other one, but the Theatrical Version lacks way more footage. Furthermore several scenes have been removed and reinserted afterwards in the TV Version, some of them are edited differently. But these differences aren't mentioned in this comparison because it would break the mold. David Lychn's version is the Theatrical Version btw. He wasn't involved in the TV Version and ordered that his name in the opening credits was going to be replaced by Alan Smithee . The main difference in the two versions is the fact that the TV Version has been split up to smaller episodes. As a result of that, the movie doesn't look like a motion picture anymore but like a big TV production.
